Tony Scott, CEO of MTBA visits Mount Beauty

Tony Scott, C.E.O. of MTBA recently visited Mount Beauty to meet with the Team Mount Beauty crew organizing the National X/C Championships in January.

Of high importance on his agenda was inspecting the course to be ridden in the Championships. After walking the course Mr. Scott commented. "The bush around the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park has rebounded from the 2003 fires magnificently creating a picture perfect location for the event. The course looks great and with some fine tuning will only get even better". Overall he was happy with the organization and confident that Team Mount Beauty will host a first class event.

Mr. Scott also took the opportunity to announce MTBA had secured an arrangement with SBS to televise the Championships. Broadcast dates and times were yet to be confirmed. When more details are known we will post them on the website.

Back By Popular Demand - Big Hill Downhill

One of the most popular club races in Australia will return in 2008. The Big Hill Downhill will run on the same weekend of every year. Stay posted for dates and make sure you pencil it in your diary; you won't be disappointed.

XC Update

El-presidente, Dave, and his two comrades, Wombat and Jordan, are teeing up times to get started on a new track. The team of three are going to make a completely new ascent to link up with Mt. Beauty's well-known and popular descents. Some of the old favourite descents, including, '03 and '06 are in the mix along with '07 and some newies. Stay tuned for when it's completed and open to ride.

Just a reminder all tracks are open and ready to be ridden. Pick up a trail map at Rocky Valley and make sure you ride everything that Mt Beauty has to offer!

Six Hours In The Saddle

Recently, our good friends over at The Beechworth Chain Gang ran their annual "Six Hours In The Saddle" or "S.H.I.T.S" race. The Mt. Beauty community was represented so well we agreed it was worthy of a report.

Young gun Paul Vandy raced with one of his Felt Racing team mates, Ash, against his other two usual team mates. Paul and Ash finished on top of the podium, as well as Paul pedalling out the fastest lap of the day.

Tory Thomas, current Australian National Champ, picked up the fastest women's time as she raced alongside partner, Tim Retchford. The couple also finished on top of the podium in a hotly contested mixed pairs.

Current Australian 24-hour champion, Kim McCormack, lead from start to finish to win. Kim finished second in the Fat Tyre Fliers "Hard Day At The Office" earlier this year and just recently won GMBC's six hour race at The You Yangs. Look out for Kim when September rolls around, as she'll be racing the world 24-hour championships in California.

Team Mt. Beauty's youngest active members, Jordan and Kris (commonly known as Wombat) teamed up to race male pairs. Never looking to win but just out there to have fun and ride well, the boys had a blast. Finishing 17 th in pairs and 34 th overall it was a great day out for the two.

Similarly, Mt Beauty teachers, Jeremy and Aaron teamed up with our web host, Stuart, to ride male three's. The team rode well, posting consistent lap times, and were rewarded with 7 th in male three's. Thanks to Stuart for donating his time and skills to keeping this site going.

The Van Der Ploeg family was well represented. It's obvious Paul wasn't the first one to step onto a podium. Older brother Neil and even older father, Gerry, raced incredibly well in the most competitive category. The two mustered up 13 laps, finishing 9 th in male pairs. Neil's lap times were up there with the best, which, I'm sure Gerry wishes were a bit slower, the oldest Vandy getting little rest between laps.

When in Mt. Beauty, make sure you help out one of our major sponsors, Rocky Valley Snow Sports and Bikes. They can help you with a service, spare parts, a new bike, snowboard or skies along with anything else you can think of.

Congratulations to last year's winner of Kona's 24-hour race at Redesdale, Tim Ferres, who ran second. Although Tim doesn't live here he often drops in for a social ride. Good luck to Timmy at the World Champs in September.

Well known athlete, and incredible XC skier, Belinda Phillips threw her leg over her bike and managed an astonishing 9 laps. This effort was rewarded with a 4 th place in solo females. Crossing the line covered in dirt and a huge smile on her face, Belinda represented the whole day well.

Another sterling individual effort came from Jenny Kromar. Jen's first ever mountain bike race saw her pedalling out an incredible 9 laps, which just her in just behind Belinda in 5 th place.

Last but defiantly not least, club workhorse and secretary Iain Moore teamed up with his wife and club helper Sharon. The two drew on good a friend, Frank Loki's experience to help them pedal out 8 laps in mixed threes. Iain has only been back on the bike 6 weeks after a long break off and Sharon competing in her first ever sporting event did a great job (managing only 8 crashes). I think it is safe to say they were grateful for Frank's help.

This beautiful April day in Beechworth was a huge success. Thanks to The Beechworth Chain Gang for putting on such an awesome day of single-track madness. Make sure you head up to North East Victoria and check out what we have to offer.

Australian National Mountain Bike Championships 2006

Mountain Bike Australia (mountain biking's national body), has announced that Team Mt Beauty will host the 2006 National Cross Country Mountain Bike Championships. The National Championships is the premier annual event on the Mountain Bike Australia calendar. Mt Beauty will host hundreds of riders and spectators from across Australia over four days from 12-15 January, 2006. The event is sure to be of a world class standard as it is the final qualifying event before the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Team Mt Beauty is one of Australia's most experienced mountain bike event promotion organizations, with over a decade of experience including staging three Australian National Championships in 1999, 2002, 2003 and now 2006. Team Mt. Beauty has also won the prestigious "Event of the Year" in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998. The Alpine High Country is a popular region for mountain biking. The Australian National Team recently trained in the region in the lead up to the World Championships in Italy.

Event Manager, Iain Moore is expecting an excellent turnout for the Nationals in 2006. "It's been a couple of years since Team Mt Beauty hosted a major national level event. We know that many riders are very keen to come back to Mt Beauty and race because the town really embraces the event. This adds to the atmosphere for the riders and spectators." Iain stated.

Mountain Bike Australia President, Tony Scott, said "We are very pleased to revisit Mt Beauty for the National Mountain Bike Championships. The venue has a long and distinguished history in Australian mountain bike circles. The whole town really gets behind the event and the atmosphere is always relaxed."

Things are gearing up for this seasons National Mountain Bike Championships and Team Mt Beauty's trail crew have been busy designing and building a new course for 2006. Course designers Bernie McArdle, Dean Barter and Garry Addinsall have done an excellent job setting a course that will be encouraging for newcomers and recreational riders but also offer a real challenge to the elite guys and girls who are chasing the National Champions jersey. Team Mt Beauty plan to rollout some new initiatives that will enhance the whole experience for both riders and spectators alike. With wineries, walks, great eateries, fishing in crystal clear Alpine rivers and the backdrop of the magnificent Kiewa Valley, Mt. Bogong and the Alpine National Park, all in all it will be a fantastic event not to be missed.

Visit Team Mt Beauty's nationals web site for further information on the event and entry details.

Team Mt Beauty look forward to working with Mountain Bike Australia in staging a successful championship in 2006.
