Sea to Summit Challenge raises $100,000
The Sea to Summit Challenge was held last weekend. $100,000 has been raised so far this year. The annual Challenge is in aid of Redkite, Australia’s leading childhood cancer support charity.
The road and mountain bike event covers 248km and climbs over 5,500 vertical metres from sea level at Merimbula’s coastline to the highest point in Australia, Mt Kosciuszko, in just a single day. The Sea to Summit Challenge is tougher than most mountain stages of the Tour de France.
For the first time in 3 years, 4 riders made it to the Summit on the day with a further 26 riders making it painfully close – 9km to be exact. There is a cut-off time at Charlottes Pass after which no rider may go out onto the Main Range.
The participants are from Australia-wide including: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Albury, Newcastle, North-East Victoria and Regional Victoria.
Sea to Summit Challenge attracts world champions and weekend warriors alike, who undertake this extraordinary physical and emotional endeavour while raising much needed funds and awareness for childhood cancer. All funds raised will assist Redkite to continue supporting children, young people and their families through the difficult journey of childhood cancer by providing essential emotional support, financial assistance and educational services. For more information about Redkite visit www.redkite.org.au
Sea to Summit Challenge has received invaluable ongoing support from numerous corporate and personal sponsors including Netti, Falls Creek, Carrington, Verofit, Snowy Hydro, McMillan Shakespeare, Kennards Hire, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (Kosciuszko), Subway Merimbula, Cycling Australia, Wild Brumby Schnapps and The Phodographer.

SBS Tour de France Host, Mike Tomalaris, launches Sea to Summit Challenge 2008 in support of Redkite
On 15th November 2008, SBS Tour de France Host, Mike Tomalaris, will launch the Sea to Summit Challenge 2008, one of the country’s ultimate single day cycling events in aid of Redkite, Australia’s leading childhood cancer support charity.
This year a record 48 cyclists and 25 support volunteers will embark on the iconic Sea to Summit Challenge. The event covers some 240km and climbs 5,500 metres from sea level at Merimbula’s coastline to the highest point in Australia, Mt Kosciuszko, in just a single day.
Put into perspective, this cycling event is tougher than many mountain stages of the Tour de France. Now in its third year, the event raised more than $45,000 over two years with nine riders in 2006, 18 riders in 2007 and now 48 in 2008. The event participants are from all walks of life and from all over Australia including Sydney, Newcastle, Canberra, Melbourne and Mt Beauty.
The event has received invaluable support from numerous corporate and personal sponsors, without whom the event would not be possible. Major sponsors for the event include Carrington, Netti, Falls Creek, Verofit and Snowy Hydro.
This event gives ordinary people the opportunity to make extraordinary achievements while raising much needed funds and awareness for childhood cancer. All funds raised will assist Redkite to continue supporting children, young people and their families through the difficult journey of childhood cancer by providing essential emotional support, financial assistance and educational services. Back By Popular Demand - Big Hill Downhill
One of the most popular club races in Australia will return in 2008. The Big Hill Downhill will run on the same weekend of every year. Stay posted for dates and make sure you pencil it in your diary; you won't be disappointed.
XC Update
El-presidente, Dave, and his two comrades, Wombat and Jordan, are teeing up times to get started on a new track. The team of three are going to make a completely new ascent to link up with Mt. Beauty's well-known and popular descents. Some of the old favourite descents, including, '03 and '06 are in the mix along with '07 and some newies. Stay tuned for when it's completed and open to ride.
Just a reminder all tracks are open and ready to be ridden. Pick up a trail map at Rocky Valley and make sure you ride everything that Mt Beauty has to offer!
Six Hours In The Saddle
Recently, our good friends over at The Beechworth Chain Gang ran their annual "Six Hours In The Saddle" or "S.H.I.T.S" race. The Mt. Beauty community was represented so well we agreed it was worthy of a report.
Young gun Paul Vandy raced with one of his Felt Racing team mates, Ash, against his other two usual team mates. Paul and Ash finished on top of the podium, as well as Paul pedalling out the fastest lap of the day.
Tory Thomas, current Australian National Champ, picked up the fastest women's time as she raced alongside partner, Tim Retchford. The couple also finished on top of the podium in a hotly contested mixed pairs.
Current Australian 24-hour champion, Kim McCormack, lead from start to finish to win. Kim finished second in the Fat Tyre Fliers "Hard Day At The Office" earlier this year and just recently won GMBC's six hour race at The You Yangs. Look out for Kim when September rolls around, as she'll be racing the world 24-hour championships in California.
Team Mt. Beauty's youngest active members, Jordan and Kris (commonly known as Wombat) teamed up to race male pairs. Never looking to win but just out there to have fun and ride well, the boys had a blast. Finishing 17 th in pairs and 34 th overall it was a great day out for the two.
Similarly, Mt Beauty teachers, Jeremy and Aaron teamed up with our web host, Stuart, to ride male three's. The team rode well, posting consistent lap times, and were rewarded with 7 th in male three's. Thanks to Stuart for donating his time and skills to keeping this site going.
The Van Der Ploeg family was well represented. It's obvious Paul wasn't the first one to step onto a podium. Older brother Neil and even older father, Gerry, raced incredibly well in the most competitive category. The two mustered up 13 laps, finishing 9 th in male pairs. Neil's lap times were up there with the best, which, I'm sure Gerry wishes were a bit slower, the oldest Vandy getting little rest between laps.
When in Mt. Beauty, make sure you help out one of our major sponsors, Rocky Valley Snow Sports and Bikes. They can help you with a service, spare parts, a new bike, snowboard or skies along with anything else you can think of.
Congratulations to last year's winner of Kona's 24-hour race at Redesdale, Tim Ferres, who ran second. Although Tim doesn't live here he often drops in for a social ride. Good luck to Timmy at the World Champs in September.
Well known athlete, and incredible XC skier, Belinda Phillips threw her leg over her bike and managed an astonishing 9 laps. This effort was rewarded with a 4 th place in solo females. Crossing the line covered in dirt and a huge smile on her face, Belinda represented the whole day well.
Another sterling individual effort came from Jenny Kromar. Jen's first ever mountain bike race saw her pedalling out an incredible 9 laps, which just her in just behind Belinda in 5 th place.
Last but defiantly not least, club workhorse and secretary Iain Moore teamed up with his wife and club helper Sharon. The two drew on good a friend, Frank Loki's experience to help them pedal out 8 laps in mixed threes. Iain has only been back on the bike 6 weeks after a long break off and Sharon competing in her first ever sporting event did a great job (managing only 8 crashes). I think it is safe to say they were grateful for Frank's help.
This beautiful April day in Beechworth was a huge success. Thanks to The Beechworth Chain Gang for putting on such an awesome day of single-track madness. Make sure you head up to North East Victoria and check out what we have to offer.
